Hodgson surprised Rooney retired from international football

Former England manager Roy Hodgson has spoken of his surprise that Wayne Rooney decided to retire from international football, as reported by the Mirror.

Hodgson, now in charge at Crystal Palace, is preparing to welcome Everton to Selhurst Park with the Eagles in desperate need of a win.

Speaking ahead of the game, Hodgson says the former Manchester United attacker does not owe anything to the England national team.

I was a little surprise when he retired, I must admit. He knows that because I’ve spoken to him via. I thought he would try and continue to get to the next World Cup, but these are the decisions players have to make.

But one thing I do know is England owes him, he owes England nothing, because he gave is all for England and did more than his fair share of what someone could expect for England.

Rooney decided to call it a day on international football back in August after turning down the chance to be part of the squad for the World Cup qualifiers.

After scoring 53 times in 119 internationals, Rooney decided to focus on his playing career as he sealed a return to Goodison Park in the summer.

Despite Everton’s slow start to the season, Rooney has impressed and been one of the club’s better performing players, scoring four times in the Premier League.
