Hurst praises ‘stand out’ Pennington performance

Former Ipswich Town manager Paul Hurst last night praised the performance of Matthew Pennington, labelling the Everton loanee the stand out player from the Championship clash against Leeds United.

The Whites won 2-0 at Elland Road against the Tractor Boys, and despite the disappointing result for the Suffolk club, which proved to be the final straw in seeing manager Hurst relieved from his duties, Pennington was name checked for putting in a promising display.

The 24-year old, on loan for the season at Portman Road, has made eight Championship appearances for Town this season, in what is his second successive season on loan in the second tier.

Last season, Pennington spent the campaign with last night’s opponents, Leeds, where he played 24 times in the league.

Speaking to Ipswich Town’s official website following the game last night, Hurst had this to say on Pennington’s display:

Matt Pennington was the stand out player for us tonight against a club he was on loan at last year.

He was on the front foot, defended extremely well, picked out some good passes and can be pleased with his performance.

It’s unclear where Pennington’s long-term future lies, especially given his age. While many speculate that the academy product could be moved on at the end of the current campaign, positive performances can only help the player long-term.
