Branthwaite says Jordan Pickford does not get the credit he deserves

Jarrad Branthwaite believes Everton teammate Jordan Pickford still does not receive the credit his performances for club and country deserve.

Branthwaite was speaking at St George’s Park after returning to the England squad, where he has joined up with Pickford for the latest round of international fixtures. Pickford now has 91 senior caps and 46 clean sheets for his country.

Asked by journalist Henry Winter whether the goalkeeper is properly appreciated, Branthwaite replied: “Probably not, no.”

He added: “He probably doesn’t get the credit he deserves. Fantastic keeper, fantastic person as well. It’s a pleasure to play with him.”

Branthwaite also pointed to Pickford’s longevity with England and his performances at major tournaments, describing him as “top for England, and top for club as well”.

Pickford has been England’s first-choice goalkeeper since the 2018 World Cup and went to his third World Cup this summer. England’s official records show that he has now made 91 senior appearances, with 19 of those coming at World Cups.

Branthwaite knows his qualities particularly well. The pair have played together regularly at Everton and are now back in the same England squad after the centre-back was recalled by Thomas Tuchel for the September and October internationals.

For Pickford, it is another endorsement from somebody who sees his work at close quarters for both club and country.
