Kevin Campbell baffled by Everton links to Alexandre Lacazette

Former Everton hitman Kevin Campbell is baffled by links between the Toffees and a star of another of his former clubs.

The Blues have been linked with experienced Arsenal hitman Alexandre Lacazette as a possible reinforcement in January amid claims that Everton have made contact with the Frenchman’s representatives.

The rumours, picked up on by the Liverpool Echo, claim that Lacazette could provide stronger competition in the central striking position – but Campbell remains unconvinced that the striker is the right fit for Everton at this moment in time.

Believing that Lacazette would be too intensely competitive for a place with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, the former Blues and Arsenal hitman spoke out on the links.

He told Goodison News: “I just think that Lacazette has got to play the number nine because that’s his game.

“He’s good with his back to goal and brings a lot of quality to the team, a great link-man – but, the number nine is Calvert-Lewin, so I just don’t see how that’s going to work.

“For me, I just don’t see it – it makes no sense.”

Summer arrival Salomon Rondon has been starting a number of matches in a row without being able to make an impact in the absence of Calvert-Lewin, so it superficially makes sense that the effectiveness in depth of strikers at Everton would come into question.

However, both Lacazette and Calvert-Lewin are simply too good to be bench-warmers; it is hard to see both strikers being accommodated in a compromise on Benitez’ 4-2-3-1 system, so one would inevitably be left dissatisfied.

It could provide more headaches than remedies to recent malaise at Goodison Park, giving some credence to Campbell’s comments.
