Kevin Campbell claims new Everton duo are silencing club doubters

Former Everton star striker Kevin Campbell has defended the club’s new arrivals in Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray, claiming they are proving their doubters wrong.

The Everton duo arrived for a combined fee of just £1.7 million over the summer, with Townsend joining on a free transfer following his release from Crystal Palace and Gray signing for a nominal fee from Bayer Leverkusen.

Everton have enjoyed a formidable start to life in the Premier League under Rafa Benitez, losing just once in their opening six games, picking up thirteen points out of a possible eighteen in the process.

One of either Townsend or Gray have started in every league game, underlining their importance in the club’s plans under Rafa Benitez.

Speaking to Goodison News, the ex-Arsenal and Everton hitman declared when asked if they are surpassing expectations:

“Big time.

“There was (sic) a lot of fans and people in the media that were looking at Everton bringing him in, but Townsend is a fine player.

“He’s been in the England squad, he’s been a consistent performer in the Premier League for years. Everton lack consistency, so you think it’s a perfect fit.

“Because he didn’t cost £40million, fans are thinking why have they done that? But, for two players, him and Demarai Gray, combined cost of £1.7million – they’re making a real difference.”

There is not always a correlation between the cost of a footballer in terms of a transfer fee and their ability, something that the duo exemplify.

With seven goals between them in their opening six league games, not to mention Townsend’s direct contributions in the League Cup, the duo has formed the bedrock of recent offensive success.
