Kevin Campbell urges Everton to sign a new central defender

Former Everton star striker Kevin Campbell has urged the Toffees to invest significantly in their defensive options in a bid to sharpen up the overall quality of the squad.

Everton have enjoyed a formidable start to life in the Premier League under Rafa Benitez, losing just once in their opening six games, picking up thirteen points out of a possible eighteen in the process.

Despite their bright start, however, Campbell fears for the Toffees’ squad depth if a further central reinforcement is not acquired.

Speaking to Goodison News, the ex-Arsenal and Everton hitman declared:

“I still think a defender is needed.

“I know they’ve got Mina, Godfrey, Keane and Holgate, but I still feel they need another because with injuries and there’s going to be suspensions.

“Everton need another one, they need a good one. I’d make a move for a top centre-half, that’s what they need. I think you upgrade that position and you’re in business.”

The likes of Ben Godfrey and Mason Holgate have often deputised at right-back in lieu of Seamus Coleman, including during the Blues’ most recent 2-0 win over Norwich City.

Although the keeping of a clean sheet is a nod to the quality that both defenders can offer on the right side of a back four, Rafa Benitez will not want to stretch the availability of his central options through creating makeshift right-backs.

In terms of targets, Goodison News have noted a report from Calciomercatoweb that has claimed that the Toffees are planning to beat Juventus to the signing of Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli.

The Milan star is out of contract in the summer and could be available cheaply as a result.
