Klaassen talks about his time at Everton

Former Everton midfielder Davy Klaassen has explained that the promise of consistent football was a driving factor in him leaving Goodison Park this summer.

The 25-year old Dutchman departed the club on Friday morning to join Bundesliga side Werder Bremen, putting pen to paper on a deal worth around £12million.

That represents a significant loss for Everton, who bought the Netherlands international from Ajax for £23.6million last summer. However, after a disappointing year in which Klaassen failed to nail down a consistent spot under three separate managers, Everton decided to cut their losses.

Signing a four-year deal in Bremen, Klaassen explained why moving away from Everton was the best decision for his career – although he holds no ill-feeling towards the club. When asked about his time at Everton, Klaassen told Werder Bremen’s official website:

No, I want to talk about it.

It was not a positive year for me. I want to make more appearances than that, but I did have a great time with my teammates and the staff at Everton.

Despite that, I want to be playing week in week out and prove my abilities as a footballer. I hope I can do that here at Werder.

I was not happy last year because I didn’t play. Before I had played a game every week for five or six years.

It’s hard to say why it didn’t work at Everton. The style of play was not my style of play. It’s very physical and less about the strategy maybe. Everyone is physical and fast in England. It is just a different style to play. At Werder I can play my game now.

Klaassen only made 16 appearances in total for Everton, starting just three times in his seven Premier League appearances.
