Lossl wants first-team spot – could he displace Pickford?

Jonas Lossl has backed himself to succeed Jordan Pickford as Everton’s first-choice goalkeeper.

The Denmark international joined the club on a free transfer this summer after leaving Huddersfield Town, and so far he has been seen as the second fiddle option in between the sticks, bumping Maarten Stekelenburg down the pecking order.

The 30-year old made 57 Premier League appearances for the Terriers over the past two years, showing that he has proven Premier League pedigree that Everton may use at their disposal.

While Jordan Pickford is currently the established first choice for both Everton and England, Lossl can envisage himself uprooting the former Sunderland man and displacing him from Marco Silva’s league starting line-up.

Talking to Tipsbladet in Denmark (via Liverpool Echo), Lossl had this to say on his first-team prospects:

Everton is one of Premier League’s best clubs and so I go to it with an open mind and take up the competition.

After all, I am drawn in to that, so I go for it. I believe 100 percent that I can become a first-team player here.

Whether it is while Jordan (Pickford) is here or when he’s gone, I don’t know. But I believe it.

The main thing is that I can see some perspectives purely sporting.

I understand from the outside that you think it’s a change for money. But I would not have moved here if I did not have faith that I could succeed. I would like to make that very clear.

While Lossl’s confidence and determination is admirable, many Huddersfield Town fans found Lossl’s claims to be a little overreaching. Reacting on Twitter, several Town fans dismissed the Dane’s chances of succeeding Pickford.

Lossl has yet to make an appearance in any of Everton’s five fixtures this season.

Quite simply, I cannot see Lossl being Everton’s first choice unless Pickford leaves. I put my hands together for his enthusiasm and determination, but that door looks to be firmly closed unless Everton do lose the former Sunderland man to injury or to a hefty transfer fee.

It can’t hurt to have players fighting to prove themselves though, so that’s positive for Silva and Everton.
