Mason Holgate appears to be set to receive his first senior England call-up, according to Mirror Sport.
Gareth Southgate and his staff have been keeping a watchful eye on the defender’s progress over the last three games, and Mirror Sport claim that they have been left impressed with what they have seen.
Holgate started the season as understudy to both Michael Keane and Yerry Mina, but Marco Silva handed him a chance to impress following a number of good showings in the Carabao Cup, and he has been a regular starter ever since late October.

The 23-year has proved to be a versatile asset for the Toffees this season, having played as a right-back and as a defensive midfielder as well as his usual position of centre-back (Transfermarkt), and that versatility may have appealed to the England manager.
Manchester City defender John Stones has suffered a dip in form this season, and other than Harry Maguire and Joe Gomez, England don’t have an abundance of strong options to fill their centre-back positions currently.
As such, Mirror Sport claim that Southgate is weighing up whether to award Holgate with a call-up for the upcoming friendlies against Italy and Denmark at the end of March.

Mason Holgate would certainly deserve an England call-up if it does indeed come to pass. Not only has he been consistently excellent for the Toffees in recent months, but he would also occupy a position not stacked with high performing talent for England.
Holgate has shown his versatility this season, and that he is both able to and comfortable moving the ball out of defence, which would line up well with how Southgate likes to organise his Three Lions side and get them playing.
Some of the uninitiated who don’t watch the centre-back on a regular basis may feel that Holgate is underserving of an England call-up, but in a time where Tyrone Mings was rewarded for a sustained upturn in form for his club, Holgate certainly warrants the opportunity to impress on the international stage.
