Rohl opens up on new Everton role after David Moyes position change

Merlin Rohl says he enjoyed being moved to right-back during Everton’s pre-season and is happy to play wherever David Moyes needs him.

The 24-year-old is primarily a midfielder but was used on the right of the defence during the summer and retained the position when the Premier League season began.

Rohl has now spoken about adapting to unfamiliar territory, admitting there is still plenty for him to learn but making clear that he enjoyed both the challenge and Everton’s pre-season.

His attitude towards what comes next is equally straightforward: he is happy to play wherever he can help the team.

Rohl happy to learn new Everton role

Rohl started Everton’s opening three Premier League matches at right-back before injury interrupted his run in the side.

Moyes now has Ainsley Maitland-Niles available in the position, while Rohl’s ability to operate in midfield gives the Everton manager another option once the German is fit again.

Rather than sounding uncomfortable about being moved away from his more familiar midfield role, Rohl spoke positively about learning the position and the work he did there during the summer.

He also discussed Everton’s unbeaten opening to the campaign. Rohl said the players are happy with their start but acknowledged that there were games in which they could have taken more points.

For now, getting fit again comes first. Rohl has missed the last three matches with an unspecified injury but said in the same interview that the problem is “coming along well”.

Moyes said before the Ipswich game that he hoped to have Rohl back by the end of the international break. Everton return to action away at Hull City on 11 October.
