Mirallas believes Moyes appointment would be like ‘going back in time’ – he’s not wrong

Kevin Mirallas has commented on reports linking David Moyes with a return to Everton, claiming it would be like ‘going back in time’ for the Blues.

Marco Silva is currently under a mountain of pressure on Merseyside, following four consecutive Premier League losses.

Reports have indicated that Silva has been given three games to save his job, although it wouldn’t be surprising to see the former Watford coach get the boot if he loses to West Ham this weekend.

Moyes is the current bookmakers’ favourite to replace the Portuguese coach, with reports this week suggesting that the Scot would welcome a return to his old stomping ground.

Mirallas however doesn’t believe it would be a good idea for the club to appoint their former boss, claiming the difference in playing styles between Silva and Moyes would be problematic for the squad.

Talking exclusively to The Athletic, Mirallas admitted he was surprised by the club’s recent run of results, saying:

Yes, because I know the quality of the players and team.

But also, they have played against strong teams. They weren’t easy games. I hope they start to win games because the team is good and has some good players.

It’s also not easy when you change a lot of players every season. You need time.

Mirallas claimed that while Moyes would likely do a good job if he returned to Goodison Park, it perhaps wouldn’t be the best move for Everton, who still harbour grand ambition of breaking through into the top six. Mirallas continued:

I don’t know if it would be a good thing (if Moyes came back) but I do know him and, for sure, he’d do a decent job.

I played only one year under Moyes but I had a good relationship with him. He always told me to dribble, do what I wanted but work hard every game. In my first season, it wasn’t easy as I was changing country but he was always behind me, even when I had injuries. That was my best year.

But when Moyes left, the club went in a different direction. Now, if you brought Moyes in, it would be like going back in time to five years ago.

I don’t know if that’s a good idea. In football, sometimes strange things happen.

You bring in Marco Silva to play nice football but now Moyes would not want to play the same way. Maybe Bernard wouldn’t play, as he doesn’t tackle. Different managers have different styles.

I think Mirallas is right on the money here, and I’m surprised to see him speak so candidly about Everton’s situation.

Moyes is a particular manager who can succeed with a club that suits his style, and Everton no longer fit in that category. Everton have transitioned from style to style since Moyes left the club, and his appointment would purely be made out of sentimentality, not sensibility.
