Mourinho confident of getting Stones in January

Chelsea will make another attempt to sign John Stones in January, according to the Evening Standard.

Chelsea signed two central defenders in Papy Djilobodji and Michael Hector on deadline-day but the Premier League holders are as keen as ever for the signature of Stones, who handed in a transfer request last week.

It was reported Everton turned down an offer of £38million for the 21-year-old a week or so ago, and Chelsea seemed to cool their interest.

But Mourinho is still confident of securing a deal for the former Barnsley boy in the summer, who is interested in a move to Stamford Bridge.

Stones is seen as a successor to the recently-maligned John Terry, but Everton are determined to keep hold of the player who is key to Roberto Martinez’s plans at Goodison Park.

The Toffeemen rejected a whole host of bids from Chelsea over the summer and both Martinez and Bill Kenwright went on record to say the starlet is not for sale.

It remains to be seen what happens in January, but another saga seems on the horizon.
