Newcastle are still keen on signing Holgate

Mason Holgate is still a target for Newcastle this month, according to a report from Mirror Sport.

The Everton centre-back has established himself as an important player for the club this season, starting 13 times in the Premier League after breaking through into the starting line-up earlier in the campaign.

The Northern Echo reported in December that the Magpies were keen on the 23-year old, with Steve Bruce said to have been impressed by the versatile defender’s performances so far this season.

Now Mirror Sport claim that Bruce still holds an interest in the defender, despite speculation from Football Insider claiming that Everton are set to offer Holgate a major pay with a new contract.

Bruce met with owner Mike Ashley on Wednesday morning to discuss the club’s transfer plans, and Holgate was said to be one name on the agenda.

Everton should absolutely not let Mason Holgate go now, or in the immediate future, because he possesses plenty of talent that could prove to be hugely beneficial to the Toffees in the long-term.

Holgate’s versatility has proved to be a valuable asset to the club this season already, with the former Barnsley man having played primarily at centre-back, but having also filled in at right-back and as a defensive midfielder (Transfermarkt).

Darren Bent believes that Everton tying Holgate down to a new contract would be ‘outstanding business’, and I concur with the former England international. Everton should, and hopefully will, refuse all contact with Newcastle concerning the centre-back.
