Only a modest profit for Toffees from any Anthony Gordon sale

  • Anthony Gordon reportedly wants to move away from Newcastle United.
  • The England international moved to the North East in January 2023.
  • Everton installed a sell-on clause into the deal to profit from any future move.

Anthony Gordon is involved in another transfer saga as it is reported he wants to push a move away from Newcastle United.

These events come just three years after the winger forced a transfer to St James’ Park, when he refused to train with Everton in January 2023.

Selling Gordon was a blow for the Toffees, but they managed to reinvest the funds made from the sale, and inserted a sell-on clause to profit from a future potential sale of the Englishman.

It now looks likely they will get a finance boost from the clause, but it will not be as much as Evertonians previously hoped.

Everton get a cut of a fee above £45 million

Newcastle will have to consider Everton’s sell-on clause if they are to sell Gordon this summer, which is beneficial for the Toffees.

But David Moyes’ side will only receive a cut of the amount the Toon sell the winger for, which is above the £45m they paid for him in January 2023, according to the Daily Mail.

The example given by the Mail stated, in a deal where Newcastle earn £75m for Gordon, Everton will get a cut of £4.5m.

This is because the Blues’ 15% sell-on clause would be only applicable to the £30m that is above the initial £75m.

A finance boost is still a finance boost

When reports first broke out surrounding Gordon’s intention to leave Eddie Howe’s team, it was circulated that Everton would benefit from a sell-on clause.

It was hoped that the Toffees would get a sizeable chunk of a figure that would be at least over £70 million, but they will now receive a lower figure than expected.

However, the fact that the Blues will be benefiting from another Gordon sale is a testament to the clever business that was conducted in 2023.

Gaining revenue from sources such as sell-on clauses is a positive sign and suggests that if Moyes is forced into selling one of his stars this summer, they will push to include a sell-on clause that the club can profit from.

This summer will be a busy one for Everton, and Gordon being involved in another transfer storm hands the Toffees an ideal boost.
