Selling Anthony Gordon was a true blessing for Everton

  • Ex-Everton winger Gordon reportedly keen to explore move away from Newcastle.
  • Toffees sold their academy product for initial fee of £40 million in January 2023.
  • Since then, has won a League Cup and earned call-up to England’s national side.

Anthony Gordon’s exit from Everton still leaves a sour taste in the mouths of many Blues.

He was a key man in their relegation battle under Frank Lampard and had the potential to become a true Everton great.

But after forcing a move away by refusing to train with the Toffees, he cemented his standing as someone who turned his back on the club when they needed him most.

Gordon’s break onto the scene highlighted his potential, and his desire to move away from Everton was, in one aspect, understandable.

Yet the manner in which he did it was, for some, unforgivable.

Since moving to Newcastle United, he has crafted himself a senior role in the side, but this does not appear to be enough for the winger.

‘New challenge’ sought by Gordon … reportedly

After four seasons in the North East, Gordon is open to a move away from Eddie Howe’s side in an attempt to ‘find a new challenge, according to The Telegraph.

Following the harsh way Gordon left Everton, surely he would not repeat his actions with Newcastle?

The 25-year-old left the Blues in hope of a more ambitious project, and based on their current trajectory at the time, it is fair to say his decision to move further north was the right one for his career.

But after helping the Toon win their first trophy since 1955 and propelling them back into the Champions League, his current intentions come across as disrespectful.

As of yet, though, he continues to train with Newcastle and is choosing to remain professional.

Gordon admitted that he was disappointed in the way Everton announced his departure from the club, as he thought he was a big part in them staying up.

So perhaps he has learnt from his mistakes during his last transfer, and would prefer to cut his current ties in a more civilised manner.

But regardless of Gordon’s actions with Newcastle, the event of selling the winger has turned out to be a blessing for Everton.

Bullet dodged by the Toffees?

He was given a senior role at Everton and opted to leave. He was given a senior role at Newcastle and now has voiced his intention to leave.

This sounds like a dodged bullet for the Toffees, and they did tremendously well to sell him for a hefty price.

Since shifting Gordon on, Everton have reinvested the money into some fabulous talents that remain at the club to this day.

Gordon is an impressive talent who deserves to be competing at the top level of football, and he has every right to force a move that benefits his individual career.

But he should note that football is a team sport, and moving away from teams that have supported and cared for you may not yield the results he wants.
