Pennington open to permanent move – a good move for all parties

Matthew Pennington has admitted he would be open to a permanent move to Hull City if his loan move works out well this season.

The 24-year old Everton defender is currently with the Tigers in what is his sixth loan move in the last five and a half years, having spent last season as a regular with Ipswich Town.

Pennington’s season-long loan agreement with Hull includes the option to make the move permanent, and the Everton academy product is hoping to find a long-term home for the beginning of next season.

With the centre-back having not yet played for Hull in the Championship, Pennington has admitted that he has to force his way into the first-team before he can think too hard about a permanent switch.

As reported by Hull Live, the defender said:

I couldn’t have stayed at Everton, that was something I didn’t want to do.

To come out here and get some games, that was what I wanted to do. I couldn’t ignore it, I needed to get out.

I have been looking for it for the last couple of years, it’s not quite happened but I am definitely looking for a permanent home and who knows, that could be here but I need to show what I am about and get in the team before that can happen.

Pennginton featured for the Toffees in pre-season but was not deemed part of Marco Silva’s first-team plans, and that ultimately led to his short-term switch to the KCOM Stadium for this campaign.

This seems like the perfect situation for everyone involved, if Pennington does his commit his future to Hull.

At 24, the defender has missed the boat on Merseyside and almost certainly won’t break into Everton’s first-team now, and he could do with settling with one team as opposed to bouncing around.

Should things work for him at the KCOM this season, it would be best for both Everton and him if he departed Goodison Park for good.
