Rangnick rejected Everton before they agreed Ancelotti deal

Everton had an approach for Ralf Rangnick turned down before the club settled on Carlo Ancelotti, according to reports.

The Italian coach is set to become the Toffees’ new manager in the next few days, having been sacked by Napoli earlier this month.

Duncan Ferguson has been in charge for the past few games, and he will lead the team out for the final time against Arsenal on Saturday before he is replaced by the 60-year coach.

He could have been replaced by someone different though, if Everton had got their way the first time round, according to reports.

Bild (via Sport Witness) claim that former RB Leipzig manager Rangnick, now the head of sport and development at Red Bull GmbH, was approached first by the Toffees as they looked to replace Marco Silva.

The 61-year old, who was also linked with Manchester United earlier this season, turned the Premier League club down and now looks set to take up a new role with AC Milan. Bild’s report doesn’t include any details about what Everton offered the former manager, when the offer was made or why it was turned down, though.

Rangnick has worked with Red Bull owned clubs RB Salzburg and RB Leipzig for several years now, playing a major part in their building process, so it would have been interesting to see how he could have helped shape Everton going forward.

Farhad Moshiri once indicated that he wanted to bring a ‘Hollywood’ manager to Goodison Park one day, to almost signpost that Everton now mean business. While Rangnick has a solid reputation, he doesn’t quite meet that remit, whereas Ancelotti does.

There are many fans who are dubious over whether Ancelotti is the right man for the job at Everton right now, and while I understand their position, I’m personally delighted that the club have all but completed a deal for the Italian.

He brings quality, prestige and an enhanced profile for the club, and I’m excited to see what he can do for the club.
