Everton shot-stopper Jordan Pickford is increasingly silencing his critics – and his indomitable display against Germany in an England shirt drew notable praise.
England are currently the only team at Euro 2020 yet to concede a goal at any stage, and England’s 2-0 win over arch-rivals and European heavyweights Germany was another fine example of Pickford’s rising stock.
Pickford was called into action to deny Chelsea playmaker Kai Havertz’ long-ranged strike in the first half in a notable flashpoint that showcased Pickford’s lightning-fast reflexes.
The Toffees goalkeeper could be seen frequently taking charge and showing leadership from the back as he communicated with his back line, cutting a composed, confident figure between the posts.
A misplaced pass from Raheem Sterling saw Germany’s Thomas Muller produce the most clear-cut chance of the game with the midfielder through on goal, but Pickford’s presence played a part in the spectacular miss that followed.
Ex-Leeds and Mnchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was one notable pundit to pour praise on Pickford for his scintillating display:
‘I like Pickford because of his composure, for England this fella seems to grow, he seems more confident,’ he said [via LancsLive].
‘That’s something that has been a criticism in an Everton shirt but in an England shirt this fella seems to grow. He’s more confident, he controls situations, we saw the Thomas Muller chance he’s being tall and as long as he can.
‘This situation (save from Kai Havertz) is a big moment of the game and these goalkeepers make saves at important times.
‘In an England shirt, he has done that remarkably well.’

Everton have been the beneficiaries of an upturn in fortunes for Pickford since February, following some close work on his mentality and a renewed commitment to self-improvement.
Such benefits are crossing over to the international stage, with four clean sheets in as many games for the goalkeeper.
Pickford’s integral role in Gareth Southgate’s hard-to-beat Three Lions is a fine testament to Everton, with his performances reflecting well on the club.
