Everton midfielder James McCarthy has come under intense criticism from Irish television pundit Eamon Dunphy. The RTE analyst voiced his opinion on the player after Ireland’s 1-1 draw with Scotland.
“McCarthy is just a talking horse.
“Horses who are supposed to do great things on the gallops every morning but never produce it on the racecourse. This guy never produces a real performance for Ireland and he rarely produces it for Everton. He’s just no good.
“He wasn’t in the game at all today. Look at the work and the ground Wes Hoolahan covered. There’s nothing from McCarthy. You just don’t see him. You don’t see Whelan. You can’t go into a game like this minus two players.”
Dunphy’s comments will bemuse Everton fans who rate McCarthy highly as he made 36 appearances for the Toffees last season. Without him in the side, Everton only managed to win 10% of matches as opposed to 39% with him in the side. Dunphy went on to comment about McCarthy’s reluctance to pass forward but that comment, like many others, could not be backup by statistics.
