Sigurdsson claims Everton are confident ahead of Liverpool clash

Gylfi Sigurdsson claims that the Everton squad are confident they can finally bring their poor Merseyside derby record to an end this weekend.

Everton last beat Liverpool in the Premier League in 2010, with Mikel Arteta and Tim Cahill the goalscorers as the Toffees saw off their bitter rivals in a 2-0 victory at Goodison Park.

Marco Silva has inspired a mini revival so far this season for Everton, having rejuvenated a number of senior squad members while also adding several key players who have also impressed.

Sigurdsson, who has become integral for Everton this season, claims that under Silva the squad aren’t daunted by the fixture this weekend, despite their poor record at the Reds’ ground.

As reported by Mirror Sport, the Iceland international explained why the squad possess renewed confidence, saying:

I think all the boys have been looking forward to the derby since the start of the season and that feeling has grown with the performances we have been putting together over the past couple of months.

We can take some confidence from the way we played at Chelsea. That was a good result because we backed it up by winning the next game against Cardiff.

The team is playing really well and getting results – and we’re grinding out wins when we’re not playing our best football.

We dealt with a very tough and scrappy game on Saturday against Cardiff and we’re happy with the past few weeks.

Sigurdsson has scored six goals and has assisted two so far this season, and the 29-year has credited the Everton squad’s work rate and determination under new manager Silva for their improved fortunes. He continued:

Things are looking good. We’ve been working very hard since day one under the manager and are putting together some very good results.

Sunday is another very big game for us. We want to make it a good one and we will be ready for the challenge.
