Silva confirms Delph and Coleman to miss Merseyside Derby

Marco Silva has ruled out both Fabian Delph and Seamus Coleman from featuring for Everton during Wednesday’s Merseyside Derby.

The Toffees duo both missed out on featuring in Silva’s match-day squad against Leicester on Sunday, and the Portuguese coach has confirmed that neither will be fit to return at Anfield.

Coleman hasn’t been in the starting line-up for some time now following the rise to prominence of Djibril Sidibe at Goodison Park, while Delph is an integral member of Silva’s side, however he has carried a knock for several weeks now.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Silva revealed that while Coleman had returned to training, he would not be in any condition to play on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Delph is not training with his Everton teammates.

Delph in particular is a blow to Everton’s hopes of beating their bitter rivals, with the midfield trio of Tom Davies, Morgan Schneiderlin and Gylfi Sigurdsson largely failing to impress as a unit.

Delph would have been a huge player to have back available to face the Reds, and the idea of Schneiderlin attempting to marshal that midfield does concern me.

Ultimately this will be the time for Everton’s midfield options to step up. Should Schneiderlin want to prove himself, Wednesday will be the perfect time for him to do so.

Sigurdsson also needs to make his presence felt. He has frequently gone missing this season, leading to him being dropped form the line-up for a small spell, and he needs to mark his starting berth with a strong performance.
