Silva insists that Jagielka remains in his plans

Everton boss Marco Silva has insisted that Phil Jagielka still has a part to play for the club this season.

The Toffees enjoyed a hectic ending to the transfer window and were able to recruit two new central defenders as they brought their summer dealings to a satisfying close.

Yerry Mina joined from Barcelona in a deal believed to be worth around £28 million, whilst Everton also completed the signing of Kurt Zouma from Chelsea on a season-long loan deal.

The duo are, on paper, likely to be the men who Silva call upon to solidify Everton’s defensive unit for the season ahead, with Jagielka’s position in the starting line-up clearly under threat.

However, new Toffees boss Silva has rubbished claims that Jagielka is now surplus to requirements at Goodison Park, insisting that the veteran defender will still be a key figure on Merseyside as the club enter a new era.

As quoted by Goal, Silva discussed his new-look defensive options:

It means nothing for Jags. We sold Mori, Williams and bought Mina and Zouma. Everything is the same. Even last season the club brought in Mangala.
