Gillingham manager Steve Evans has admitted that Everton are indeed interested in young starlet Joe Walsh.
We covered the story earlier this week that Everton were said to be keeping tabs on 17-year old goalkeeper Walsh, who has also attracted the attention of Celtic this season.
Now Walsh’s manager, Evans, has admitted as such, specifically naming Everton as an interested party.
However, Evans also clarified that there is a distinct difference between looking at a player and wanting to buy a player. Talking to Kent Online (via Football League World), Evans said:
Some of these big clubs will be looking and thinking, because of the homegrown rule as well, they need homegrown players. He [Walsh] is a big asset to us.
We know the people that are coming, it’s not made up. Celtic have been here, Everton have been here, overseas clubs, a couple of German clubs saying they are looking at our young goalkeeper. But there is a difference between looking and being prepared to come back and buy someone.

It isn’t surprising that Everton are looking at young talent to continue bolstering the club’s youth squads, as this is something they have done for quite some time.
For a goalkeeper, it is incredibly difficult to break through into a club’s first team set-up, which could mean that Celtic have the advantage, as the path to the first team in Glasgow would appear easier than at Goodison Park.
However, if Marcel Brands and the scouting team have identified him as a top young talent, then hopefully the pull of the Premier League can tempt Walsh to join the Toffees, should Everton return with the intent of purchasing the player.
