Stones is a ‘once in a generation’ player

Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard has spoke of how he feels that players of the ability of young defender John Stones only come around ‘once every few generations’.

Stones was the subject of a £38 million move from reigning champions Chelsea in the summer, but Everton remained firm on their stance that the England-international was not to be sold.

Speaking to the Daily Star in a recent interview, American goalkeeper Howard described Stones as a ‘brilliant talent’.

I think Stonesy is a brilliant talent. Just to watch him, the way he glides with the ball, reads situations. He’s so young. He’s only going to get better and better. I think you’re looking at a world class centre back in the next five years.

Howard was also particularly impressed by Stones’ strong mentality and willingness to shrug off criticism, explaining that it is this kind of mentality that will make the young Englishman a ‘top player’.

When you have a young player who doesn’t understand what pressure is, shrugs off criticism, he’s brilliant. The top players, that’s what in the end make them the best – their mentality.

Stones will now join up with the England national team as they prepare to take on Spain and France in friendlies.

The former Barnsley defender has come on leaps and bound since he made the £3million move to Goodison Park in January 2013 and his development hasn’t gone unnoticed, the Goodison Park hierarchy want to reward him with a new deal to go along with the no.5 shirt he was given at the start of pre-season.
