Evertonians might want to make a note of the date. TalkSPORT has offered a sympathetic comparison between the Blues and Manchester City as the debate around the latter’s Premier League case continues.
Presenter Max Scott has pointed towards the way Everton and Nottingham Forest dealt with their respective punishments for breaches of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules.
He argues that both clubs went through the process and ultimately served sporting penalties, leaving him with little sympathy for City as they continue to challenge the findings against them.
“Everton and Forest took the punishment and just got on with it,” Scott said on talkSPORT’s No BS podcast.
Everton comparison raised in Man City debate
The circumstances surrounding the three clubs are not directly comparable.
Everton were docked a total of eight points during the 2023/24 season following two separate PSR cases. The Blues successfully appealed against their initial 10-point deduction, which was reduced to six, before receiving a further two-point penalty later in the campaign.
Nottingham Forest were deducted four points for their own PSR breach. City’s case is considerably larger and concerns different rules and allegations. The club also retains the right to appeal the independent commission’s findings, just as Everton exercised their own appeal rights when punished.
Scott’s point was therefore about the way Everton and Forest ultimately dealt with sporting sanctions rather than an argument that the underlying cases were the same. For Evertonians who remember the anger and uncertainty surrounding those deductions, there may nevertheless be some satisfaction in hearing the club’s experience used as part of the wider debate over what happens next at City.
And given talkSPORT and Everton haven’t always made the most comfortable of bedfellows, supporters might also enjoy the novelty of finding themselves on the same side of an argument for once.
