Toffees fans react as Son’s red card gets overturned

Heung-min Son’s red card in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur has been overturned by an independent panel.

The South Korean initially saw yellow for a reckless challenge on Andre Gomes with 10 minutes to go before VAR overruled referee Martin Atkinson’s decision.

Gomes suffered a dislocation fracture to his right ankle, but an Independent Regulatory Commission assessed the decision on Tuesday morning following Spurs’ appeal and agreed it was a wrongful dismissal.

Son is now available for Spurs’ next three games and the outcome has unsurprisingly left plenty of Everton fans furious…

In all honesty, I’ve got to disagree with these supporters.

The decision has been rightfully overturned; replays showed that Gomes’ horrific injury occurred following Son’s challenge and before he collided with Serge Aurier.

However, questions must be asked about VAR. How hasn’t the technology picked that up?

It’s baffling how the referee Atkinson is feeling the brunt of the abuse online when he, in fact, handed Son the correct punishment in the first place.

Everton have confirmed Gomes’ surgery was a success, but losing him just as he was hitting a bit of form is a huge blow.

matchday.
