Tottenham are moving on Everton target Hojbjerg

Tottenham are attempting to pull off a late move to sign Southampton midfielder and Everton target Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, according to Sky Sports News (via Transfer Centre at 13:36).

Gianluca Di Marzio told Sky Sports (13:57) last week that Carlo Ancelotti had made the Denmark international his top midfield priority this month, with Everton keen on strengthening their midfield department before Friday’s transfer deadline.

It was reported that Hojbjerg would cost Everton around £35million, which the Toffees were reluctant to pay for the Saints captain, who was part of the Bayern Munich treble-winning squad back in 2012/13.

Now Sky Sports claim that Spurs are eyeing an audacious late move, with efforts already underway.

The report also suggests that Arsenal and Everton are believed to be keen, while Ralph Hasenhuttl is unlikely to let him leave this late into the window.

While Hojbjerg may not have been the exciting name that Everton fans had hoped for, the Dane would have added more steel and determination to Everton’s midfield group, with WhoScored crediting the midfielder as a ‘strong’ intercepter of the ball whose style of play is tackle-heavy.

A four-time Bundesliga title holder and Champions League winner with Bayern Munich, Hojbjerg has a degree of pedigree that can’t be ignored, and with the 24-year having just 18 months left on his Saints contract, the South Coast club would likely cash in if offered the right fee.

Do I think Everton are interested and/or stand a chance at landing Hojbjerg? Certainly not. The Athletic report that any transfer business for Everton at this point is “unlikely”, although they also claim that a late deal “can’t be totally discounted”.

We’ll have to wait and see, but I’m not getting my hopes up, personally…
