Everton manager David Unsworth has slammed the lack of commitment shown by the club’s players during the Europa League defeat, as per a report from the Independent.
Harsh but honest words from the former Toffees U-23s manager came after they were humiliated by Serie A side Atalanta at Goodison Park.
The 5-1 loss was the worst defeat for an English side in Europe’s secondary competition since 1996 and was played in front of Everton’s second lowest ever attendance for a European home fixture.

Speaking after the game, Unsworth said:
I’d like to think every single player is hurting the way I am at the moment and if they are not then they shouldn’t be here at this great club
The minimum requirement is 100 percent effort. Only those players will know themselves when they look themselves in the mirror at night. The manner we capitulated just isn’t acceptable.
[The] players need to take responsibility – senior players, foreign players, young players. Everton fans will be disappointed with what they saw and so am I.
Everton appear to be closing in on a new manager, but with no official decision announced, Unsworth was quizzed on his own future at the club.
It is an honour for me to be a manager and lead this great club but at the same time, you need your players to come with you and give you everything they’ve got.

It is still unclear as to who Everton’s next manager will be having had a £20 million bid rejected by Watford for Marco Silva.
It remains to be seen if Everton can put their poor start behind them. But Unsworth, or whoever comes in to replace him, needs to find a system that works for the team and quickly if they are to stop the rot.
