Virginia given boost as Reading manager sacked – positive for Everton

Joao Virginia may have been given a second chance at Reading after manager Jose Gomes was sacked on Wednesday.

The Portuguese coach was relieved of his duties at the Madejski Stadium after his side registered just two wins in 11 games to kick off the new Championship season.

Virginia, who signed for the Royals on a season-long loan from Everton this summer, started the first two games in the league before a number of clangers saw him dropped.

Virginia’s only other appearance came in the Carabao Cup when he was given a shot to impress, however another howler against Wolves saw him back out of the starting line-up for the following league game.

Now that Gomes has been sacked however, the 19-year old goalkeeper will be hoping that whoever replaces him in the Reading dugout will give him another chance.

This can only be a good sign for Everton, as Virginia needs minutes to continue his development. Whether he’ll get them or not remains to be seen, but a fresh start certainly can’t do him any harm.

If his game time doesn’t improve by January, a re-call could be necessary, as Virginia isn’t learning by not playing regular football. Whether he would then remain with the Under-23s or heads out on another loan is unclear.

Hopefully though, he’ll be given another opportunity by Reading, and he’ll grab it with both hands.
