  • Seamus Coleman is set to leave Everton after 17 years with the club.
  • He was the Toffees’ primary right back for the majority of his time with the Blues.
  • Moyes will try to find someone who can match Coleman’s effort and passion.

Everton have announced Seamus Coleman will leave the club after 17 years on Merseyside.

As captain of the Toffees, his starting role has dwindled in recent years as the defender has struggled to maintain match fitness.

His legacy at the club will never be forgotten, and the Irishman will go down as one of their finest right backs.

But with the summer transfer window fast approaching, Coleman’s departure reveals one of David Moyes’ priorities for the coming months.

Everton will be searching for a new right back

Moyes currently uses Jake O’Brien as his starting right back, and has sporadically used natural full backs, Nathan Patterson and Coleman.

Following links that have suggested Patterson will move away from Everton, and news that the Blues’ captain will leave Hill Dickinson Stadium, it highlights that the right side of the back line is an area that will need attention in the transfer window.

The Toffees have already been linked with multiple right backs, but recent news dictates that they must add bodies to the right of their defensive unit.

Everton are overdue a full back reinvigoration

Everton’s last ambitious signing at full back was Adam Aznou in the recent summer window, but he has failed to break into the starting XI, and his future at Hill Dickinson Stadium is uncertain.

Before that, their full backs have been neglected, with Vitalii Mykolenko going unchallenged at left back since his arrival in 2022, and the right back position has been juggled about between Patterson, O’Brien, and Ashley Young.

One criticism of Everton’s tactical setup this year is their inability to capitalise on moments when they hold the advantage.

A lot of this stems from not having sufficient full backs who can push into the opponent’s third and generate chances on goal.

O’Brien and Mykolenko have shown a willingness to do so, which spotlights that Moyes wants to play with forward-thinking full backs, but the duo simply do not possess the ability to be genuine attacking threats.

This summer is now an opportunity for Everton’s manager to find players that fit this mould, so the Toffees can become a ruthless attacking force.
