Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher was the subject of an amusing retort from Everton star Richarlison on Twitter.

The pundit was critical of the Brazilian after the Toffees’ defeat at home to Leeds on Saturday, with the 23-year-old’s fellow countryman Raphinha netting the only goal of the game.

Carragher, who was on punditry duty for the match, became embroiled in online commentary over the Everton forward’s performance. Having spent his entire career at Anfield, it is perhaps unsurprising that he was keen to examine with a critical eye – though one tweet caught the eye of Richarlison himself.

Having been tagged by an Evertonian, a response was garnered from Carragher, who replied: “You got battered it should’ve been 6-2, at no point in the game were you on top. You had 2 very good chances 1st half, one from a set piece the other when the Leeds defender made a mistake.

“Phillips ran the game from minute 1 to 90. If you don’t agree the bias is yours not mine!”

When the fan then referenced a piece of Carragher’s commentary during the Leeds game, Carragher moved to justify his comments. Carragher wrote back: “Good! Talking about Richarlison going down is nothing to do with bias. Every EFC game I do he goes down 3/4 times like he’s got a big injury then just gets up!

“It’s not about getting a penalty or a foul but pretending he’s hurt when he’s not.”

It was this personal reference which sparked a reaction from Richarlison, who responded to Carragher by replying with a GIF of himself performing a ‘shush’ celebration, with an accompanying emoji to match.

This act of light-hearted involvement may well delight Everton fans, as it highlights the rivalry which exists between the Merseyside clubs and saw Richarlison have the last word on Carragher.

As for the Brazilian himself, his willingness to shrug off criticism is commendable. Indeed, in an era of Twitter two-cents, it is perhaps the most viable strategy in dealing with social media and punditry of a critical nature.
