Seven night matches. Why Evertonians are angry

Evertonians are furious about the time change for their games. This leaves match-going supporters unimpressed as the Premier League aims to meet TV viewer expectations.

The rescheduling of Everton’s May clash with Manchester City exposed it. This means that the Toffees have seven Monday night fixtures this season.

However, the Blue of Merseyside have only three 3pm fixtures at the Hill Dickinson planned. Many believe this was to accommodate the requirements of rival clubs and broadcasters, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Ultimately, the reaction was outrage among fan organisations, some of whom called it an act of “disregard.”

Everton Fan Advisory Board response

As a result, the Everton Fan Advisory Board reached out to the Premier League. In the letter, they stated it was “placing unacceptable strain on supporters”. Also, it was “Forcing fans to absorb additional travel costs, rearrange work and family commitments, and navigate significant logistical challenges at short notice.”

Reports from the BBC claim Sky Sports is the root cause of the issue. Moreover, the Premier League has now made 270 out of 380 fixtures available for broadcast. This shows the channel’s position of power, owning four of the five TV packages.

The Everton Disabled Supporters’ Association (EDSA) also voiced its frustration. They told the Echo that attending Monday night matches was more challenging for many of its members. Fortunately, the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) backed the FAB’s position.

Regarding the ongoing issue, they said: “Both the broadcasters and Premier League have questions to answer on this, and we’ll be raising these TV/fixture issues at our upcoming supporter engagement meetings.”

It’s not just the Toffees. Manchester United have had eight games moved to Friday or Monday. While West Ham has had seven, and Leeds United six.

Moyes shares his thoughts

Sources suggest a mix of factors beyond their control have left the Blues exposed to Monday night fixtures. However, the Premier League declined to comment but had already warned of more anti-social kick-off times and late scheduling changes this season.

Moyes has already spoken to the Echo and said that Monday night games don’t have a significant impact on their matchday plans. He also insisted that supporters are the driving force for their players. After the Chelsea game, he backed the fans for showing tremendous support.

Former Everton left-back Michael Ball believes the Premier League should give more thought to the people than to broadcasting. When speaking to the Echo, he said, “We saw against Chelsea – before, during and after – what a lot of fans had been wanting for months and what it can mean for the matchday experience.”

What does this mean?

Football’s business end is slowly unravelling. Broadcast allocations have just shown that clubs participating in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League are the priority.

FAB acknowledged that Everton’s games could likely be a subject of movement, but has argued that the demands placed on supporters have been extensive.

The EDSA letter said, “We fully understand the commercial realities and importance of broadcasting revenues. However, the cumulative effect of these decisions is now materially damaging supporter accessibility, matchday experience, and long-term engagement.”

The group pointed out: “This is happening at a time when fans are already under financial pressure due to the wider cost of living and the club’s transition to a new stadium.”
