Jordan Pickford has made no secret of Everton’s target for the final six games of the season. The England No. 1 has been in brilliant form this season. He will be the key man as Everton host Sunday’s historic first Merseyside derby at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Speaking to Everton, the England number one outlined the squad’s determination to secure European football.
“The manager’s aim in pre-season was to get Everton back in Europe and that’s still our aim,” Pickford said. “We’ve got six big games to go. We got a point [against Brentford] and we take on Liverpool next. It’ll be a massive game – the first Merseyside derby at Hill Dickinson. We’re taking each game as it comes and hopefully, we’ll get the Toffees on a European tour.”
A victory against Liverpool would lift Everton to 50 Premier League points and close the gap on Arne Slot’s fifth‑placed side to just two points. The Blues are level on points with Brentford and within touching distance of the Champions League places.
Jordan Pickford: ‘They’re still a threat’
Pickford acknowledged that Liverpool are not at their best this season but warned against complacency. “We’ve got a big game against Liverpool – the reigning champions. They’re obviously not having the best of seasons this season, but they’re still a threat. It’s a game we’re looking forward to. We’re taking each game as it comes and focusing on the next game we’ve got. That’s what the manager is telling us to do – just take each game as they come.”
Everton were outstanding in their last home match, thrashing Chelsea 3‑0. Pickford kept his 100th clean sheet for the club that day, and he knows another big performance will be required on Sunday.
A season of excellence for Everton’s number one
Pickford has started all 32 of Everton’s Premier League games this season, playing every minute. He has kept 11 clean sheets, joint‑second in the division, while he leads the league in goals prevented as per Sofascore. His total of 100 clean sheets for Everton places him fifth on the club’s all‑time list, behind only Neville Southall, Gordon West, Tim Howard and Ted Sagar.
Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson highlighted Pickford’s mental strength as a key factor in his longevity. “Jordan has worked extremely hard on his game, but I also think he has worked extremely hard on himself, and the mentality of being England’s number one as well,” Robinson said. “When you play for England, you come under huge scrutiny whenever a goal goes in and you have to deal with the noise – but Jordan has done more than that, he has silenced it.”
Pickford himself has always stressed his commitment to Everton. “I do my best for Everton week‑in, week‑out, and I’m always striving to improve,” he said. That dedication has never wavered, even as bigger clubs have circled.
Now, with six games remaining and a derby at a sold‑out Hill Dickinson Stadium on the horizon, Pickford wants to lead Everton into Europe. If his words are anything to go by, the Blues have every intention of making that tour a reality.
