Nathan Patterson features in historic Scotland victory
  • Nathan Patterson made his FIFA World Cup debut for Scotland.
  • The defender replaced Aaron Hickey in the 75th minute.
  • This was Scotland’s first win at World Cup since 1990.

Scotland secured their first win at a FIFA World Cup since 1990 after defeating Haiti 1-0.

National hero John McGinn bagged the winner in the 28th minute thanks to a kind deflection, but Steve Clarke’s men faced credible resilience from the Haitians.

Their opponents gradually grew into the game as Scotland retreated into their half and opted to setup for the counter, yet they remained firm and achieved one of their finest results this century.

Nathan Patterson becomes a part of Scottish history

Nathan Patterson has struggled on Merseyside since making his move from Rangers in January 2022.

Life under David Moyes has not been easy, and even when the Toffees were short on men in their most recent season, the right back failed to gain consistent minutes.

But in a campaign that saw Patterson warm the Everton bench, he still managed to find his way into Scotland’s first World Cup squad since 1998, and played a part in a famous night in Massachusetts.

As Haiti began to apply more pressure on their opponents, Clarke opted to refresh things at the back, which saw Patterson replace Aaron Hickey in the 75th minute.

Making his first appearance at a World Cup, it was somewhat a baptism of fire for the 24-year-old who faced a pacey left wing duo of Martin Experience and Ruben Providence.

Yet he played a core part of resolute display from the Scots, and helped push his nation to a first World Cup win in 36 years.

A much-needed night for Nathan Patterson

At one point this season, it looked like Patterson was handed a final chance to prove himself as a first-team Everton player, but it now appears his time on Merseyside will come to an end.

Naturally he will feel disappointed about how his time at Hill Dickinson Stadium will finish, so to feature in one of his nations greatest victory’s in the modern era, will certainly give him a much-needed confidence boost.

Patterson will be keeping one eye on his future ahead of the 2026-27 season, and proving himself as a key man Scotland’s World Cup team is going to attract attention from multiple parties.

The win against Haiti gives Scotland a real chance of qualifying for the knockout stages, which means Patterson will no doubt feature more in the coming weeks.
