Jordan Pickford reached a significant milestone on Saturday night. The Everton goalkeeper kept his 100th clean sheet for the club in the 3-0 victory over Chelsea at Hill Dickinson Stadium, adding another chapter to his legacy on Merseyside.
The England number one produced a string of outstanding saves to preserve the game for Everton, none more important than the one that came in the 36th minute. With Everton leading 1-0 through Beto’s opener, a Chelsea corner caused chaos in the six-yard box. The ball fell invitingly for Enzo Fernandez, who unleashed an acrobatic volley from close range. Pickford read the danger, moved across his goal and somehow tipped the ball over the bar.
Pickford’s place in Everton history
Jordan Pickford has been a long-time mainstay at Everton. The clean sheet milestone has solidified Pickford’s legendary status at the club further. He now sits fifth on the club’s all-time list, behind Ted Sagar (120), Tim Howard (133), Gordon West (155) and the iconic Neville Southall (269).
Since joining the club from Sunderland in 2017, Pickford has played 351 matches for Everton. This season alone, he has recorded 11 clean sheets in the Premier League, moving him joint-second in the standings alongside Gianluigi Donnarumma.
His record against Chelsea is particularly impressive. Saturday’s clean sheet was his eighth against the Blues, with seven of those coming at home. In nine home matches against Chelsea, Pickford has recorded six wins, two draws and seven clean sheets.
He has conceded just two goals at home against them, both from the penalty spot. In fact, he has not let in a single goal from open play against Chelsea at home in the Premier League over his last 546 minutes.
Another brilliant performance on the night
Pickford’s contribution went beyond the milestone. He was called into action again on the hour mark, tipping another Fernandez effort wide of the far post to preserve Everton’s lead. By the time Beto scored his second and Iliman Ndiaye added a third, the result was secure. But without Pickford’s interventions at key moments, the game could have taken a very different turn.
David Moyes’ side are now seventh in the Premier League, just two points off fifth place and the Champions League spots that England’s coefficient ranking has likely secured. With Everton’s number one in this form, the Toffees look good value for European qualification.
The 100 clean sheets milestone is a testament to his consistency, his durability and his quality. There may be more to come before the season is out, as Everton has just seven games remaining for the campaign.
