Everton players at World Cup tracker: Pickford stands alone after Senegal’s exit

Pickford, Gueye, Ndiaye and Patterson have all featured at the World Cup so far, but only Everton’s keeper is still standing.

England beat DR Congo 2-1 in Atlanta to reach the last 16, Harry Kane scoring twice in the final quarter of an hour after Brian Cipenga had given DR Congo an early shock lead.

Senegal’s tournament ended on the same night, beaten 3-2 after extra time by Belgium, having led twice, with Youri Tielemans’ penalty deep into the additional 30 minutes sending Rudi Garcia’s side through instead.

It means Idrissa Gana Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye are both out of the World Cup, joining Nathan Patterson on the plane home. Jordan Pickford is the last Everton player left in the tournament, with England now facing co-hosts Mexico in the round of 16 on Sunday.

ReadEverton will continue to update this tracker while Pickford remains involved.

Jordan Pickford (England)

Pickford was beaten at his near post inside seven minutes as DR Congo threatened one of the shocks of the round, Cipenga finishing after a mix-up in England’s defence. It proved to be the only real blemish on an otherwise quiet night for the goalkeeper, who had little else to deal with as England grew into the game and Kane’s double turned things around in the closing stages.

The performance drew mixed reviews, with Pickford’s positioning for the goal picked out for criticism by several outlets. A fuller breakdown of the error, and what it means heading into the knockout rounds, is available in our analysis of Pickford’s night in Atlanta.

England now face an even tougher test against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, a raucous, partisan atmosphere that will present a very different challenge to the one Pickford faced in Atlanta.

Idrissa Gana Gueye (Senegal) — Eliminated

Gueye’s World Cup came to an end in one of the more dramatic ties of the round, Senegal twice taking the lead against Belgium before being pegged back and eventually beaten in extra time. The Everton midfielder anchored the side for close to two hours, testing Thibaut Courtois from distance and driving Senegal’s play through the middle before being replaced late on as Pape Thiaw looked to freshen things up.

His departure came before Belgium’s winner. A closer look at his performance, and what comes next for him at club level with his Everton contract understood to be up this summer, is available in our full analysis.

Iliman Ndiaye (Senegal) — Eliminated

Ndiaye was handed a rare World Cup start out wide against Belgium and combined well down the right, causing problems in open play without adding to his tournament tally of one goal and one assist. He was withdrawn during the hydration break in extra time, with the tie still level, and watched the closing stages from the bench as Belgium completed their turnaround.

It brings a first World Cup campaign to a close that should have done his reputation no harm, even in defeat. More detail on his display, including the numbers behind it, can be found in our match analysis.

A fuller breakdown of his performance, including how it might shape his standing at Everton heading into next season, is available in our match report on Scotland’s defeat to Brazil.

Everton’s World Cup representation

A night that promised late drama for Everton fans delivered it in full, but with contrasting outcomes. Pickford’s error at his near post threatened to define England’s night before Kane’s late double sent them through to face Mexico. At the same time, Gueye and Ndiaye watched Senegal’s World Cup slip away in extra time against Belgium, two goals up at one stage before Tielemans completed a stunning comeback.

It leaves Pickford as Everton’s sole representative heading into the knockout rounds proper, with Sunday’s meeting with Mexico at the Estadio Azteca shaping up as one of the toughest away days of his international career.

This page will be updated again after England’s round of 16 tie against Mexico.
