Today’s Everton news round-up & talking points — Friday 17th July

A World Cup verdict, a fresh escalation in the wing chase, and Troy Deeney refusing to let a feud die down — here’s everything that mattered in Everton news today.

Pickford’s tournament, assessed

With the dust settled on England’s run to the semi-finals, we took a longer look at Jordan Pickford’s World Cup — six games, two clean sheets, and a record-breaking 18th cap that saw him pass Peter Shilton as England’s most-capped World Cup goalkeeper. The conclusion: reputation held, and arguably nudged a fraction higher, regardless of how Wednesday’s exit to Argentina ended.

Bardghji chase heats up

Everton have made contact over a move for Barcelona winger Roony Bardghji, according to a fresh report from Mundo Deportivo, joining five other Premier League clubs already known to be interested. Barcelona want the situation resolved before their pre-season trip to England on 27 July, giving any interested party around ten days to get a deal done.

New away kit gets its first outing

Everton’s 2026/27 away kit — first spotted on a Liverpool billboard last week — will be worn competitively for the first time on Saturday, when Moyes’ side open their pre-season campaign against Dundee at Dens Park.

Deeney doubles down — twice

The Troy Deeney saga rumbled on all day. First, the pundit hit back at Everton’s official TikTok account, branding the club “tinpot” after they poked fun at his ongoing criticism of Pickford.

With that one refusing to go away, we also looked back at some of Deeney’s other notable moments of speaking his mind — a reminder this is far from his first stab at Everton.

And Pickford’s England future questioned again

As if Deeney wasn’t enough, talkSPORT’s Rory Jennings became the latest voice to question whether Pickford should continue playing for England, telling listeners “I think it’s over” following Wednesday’s semi-final exit.

It’s a familiar pattern for Evertonians — a difficult result prompts fresh calls for change, regardless of what’s come before it.

Finnigan signs on for a 20th year

Away from the men’s team, Everton Women’s captain Megan Finnigan signed a new one-year deal, extending her stay at the club into a 20th year as she targets a return from the ACL injury that kept her out all of last season.

That’s everything from today — check back tomorrow for the next instalment.
