Moyes sends clear Everton message after back-to-back blanks

David Moyes, Everton

David Moyes has called on Everton to rediscover their clinical edge as they prepare to face Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup tonight.

Everton have failed to score in successive 2-0 Premier League defeats against Chelsea and Arsenal, leaving Moyes looking for an improvement in the final third when Newcastle visit the Hill Dickinson.

Moyes wants Everton to take their chances

Writing in his programme notes ahead of the Newcastle game, Moyes acknowledged there had been positives in both recent defeats but pointed towards Everton’s finishing as an area which must improve. “Even though we had opportunities in both games, I felt we were not clinical enough in our attacking play, and we need to get back to finishing opportunities,” he said.

It follows a similar assessment after the defeat at Arsenal, when Moyes said he wanted Everton to create more chances while accepting they may only get a handful against the strongest opposition. The issue over the past two games has been making those moments count, with the Blues unable to find the goal which might have changed the direction of either contest.

Newcastle provide an immediate opportunity to respond, with Everton one victory away from a Carabao Cup quarter-final. Moyes believes progress in the competition can boost confidence and have a positive impact on league form, while his players have already made clear that a cup run is something they have targeted this season.

Another sell-out crowd will be waiting at the Hill Dickinson tonight, with Fleetwood Town awaiting the winners in the last eight. Everton’s route is clear enough, but after consecutive blanks Moyes also knows what needs to change if his side are to take the next step.
