Everton supporters are being urged to arrive early at the Hill Dickinson tonight as The 1878s prepare a major flag and banner display before the Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle United.
The fan group will make its return to in-stadium displays for a game, which could send Everton into the quarter-finals, with flags set to cover the upper and lower tiers of the South Stand.
The 1878s call for Everton volunteers
The 1878s have asked supporters to help with the display, with large wavers being handed out from the front of the South Stand from around 30 minutes before the 7.45pm kick-off.
Fans in the Lower South, or those able to reach the area through the concourse, have been asked to contact The 1878s directly if they would like to volunteer. The group said: “Let’s set the tone and get right behind the team from minute one.”
The display marks a change of course after The 1878s announced in September that they were stepping back from organising displays amid frustration over Everton’s transfer business. Their return was announced after The Friedkin Group subsequently confirmed it was exploring new investment, including the potential sale of a controlling interest.
The group said at the time that unity between supporters, players and management was particularly important during the uncertainty surrounding the club’s future.
Tonight’s occasion also carries significance on the pitch. Everton have not won a major trophy since 1995 and victory over Newcastle would secure a place in the last eight of the Carabao Cup.
The club’s official matchday guide asks supporters to wave the flags as the teams emerge and leave them beneath their seats afterwards so volunteers can collect and reuse them.
For The 1878s, the message before the game is straightforward:
“Let’s bring our voices from the off and make it a loud one under the lights.”
