David Moyes believes Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall deserves an England call-up after another influential performance for Everton against Newcastle United.
Dewsbury-Hall was named player of the match as Everton won 1-0 at St James’ Park on Monday, having also taken the award in Thursday’s 3-1 Carabao Cup victory over the same opposition.
Moyes backs Dewsbury-Hall for England
Moyes used his post-match interview to push Dewsbury-Hall’s case for international recognition after another performance in which the midfielder was central to Everton’s best attacking work. The 28-year-old created opportunities for Jake O’Brien and Harrison Armstrong before the break and later tested Lukas Hornicek himself as Everton looked to add to Thierno Barry’s second-half goal.
Dewsbury-Hall was equally positive about the team’s performance, describing it as “one of our best performances of the season” in his post-match interview with Seamus Coleman. Everton had expected Newcastle to respond after losing at the Hill Dickinson four days earlier, but Dewsbury-Hall felt the visitors prevented them from building early momentum.
“I thought at the start it was us pressing and pushing for a goal,” he said. “We had some good opportunities and that set the tone for the rest of the game.”
The victory moved Everton up to seventh and completed an excellent four days after their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals was secured on Thursday. Dewsbury-Hall also made clear that his ambitions extend beyond simply establishing Everton in mid-table. He described the club as a “sleeping giant” and said he wanted to win silverware or give supporters something significant to celebrate.
As for England, he was rather more restrained than his manager.
“If I’m performing for my football club, it only gives me a better chance of playing for my country,” he said.
Two player-of-the-match performances in four days have certainly strengthened that argument.
