Three points, seven places: Massive incentive for the Toffees in Newcastle vs Everton clash

Significant Premier League momentum is on the line tonight in the Newcastle vs Everton clash at St. James’ Park.

Both sides go into this encounter in unconvincing form, with no clear favourite to win.

A win for Everton would lift David Moyes’ team up to seventh in the Premier League table given how clustered the middle of the pack is.

That would be great preparation for the last game ahead of the upcoming international break, when Coventry visit the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Friday night.

Conversely, a coveted victory for Newcastle United would send the Magpies into the same seventh position, and four points ahead of the Blues.

In the grand scheme of things, nothing will be decided tonight, but this is a winnable away game.

Three reasons to believe for Everton

Here are three reasons Everton have a realistic chance to pick up three points in Newcastle.

Recent psychological edge

Everton comprehensively beat Newcastle 3-1 in the EFL Cup just four days ago, with goals from James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry. That result will give David Moyes’ side significant confidence and belief that they can trouble the Magpies again, especially with the same tactical approach fresh in the players’ minds.

Strong recent head-to-head record

Everton have the better of recent meetings. They won 3-2 on their last league visit to St James’ Park earlier this year and hold a slight overall edge in the latest set of encounters.

This recent history of success on Tyneside suggests they know how to hurt Newcastle.

Newcastle’s defensive frailties

The hosts have conceded 14 goals in eight Premier League games and are yet to keep a clean sheet at home in any competition this season. With only one league win at St James’ Park so far, their back line is vulnerable, and that’s something a well-organised Everton side can exploit on the counter or from set pieces.

A top performance can deliver a result for Everton, it is not beyond the team’s reach!

What has David Moyes said about Newcastle

Ahead of the second meeting between the clubs in five days, David Moyes was speaking at the pre-match press conference:

“It’s a different ball game going to St James’ Park on a Monday evening. They’ve got a great crowd up there so you always know you’re up against it.

“But, we go up there with confidence. We have played Newcastle a couple of times this year and done really well, so we’ll have to try and continue it.

“Newcastle have got some really, really good players. Players you need to concern yourself about, added the Scotsman.

“Newcastle brought a fantastic support down here and I’ve got no doubt the Everton supporters will do the same. It’s a tough game, Monday night games are never easy as well, but looking forward to it now.”
