- Manchester City’s Rico Lewis is reported to be on Everton’s transfer radar.
- England captain Harry Kane has voiced his support for the young defender.
- The 21-year-old has already played over 100 games for Pep Guardiola’s side.
In recent seasons Everton have been forced to rein in their transfer spending amid ownership troubles and financial restrictions.
But with such negativities now something of the past, David Moyes is prepared to spend big ahead of the 2026-27 season.
With the centre of defence already being consolidated after offering Michael Keane a new contract, attention turns to the full back department, where Everton do not boast an array of options.
A name that has been floated with the Toffees is Rico Lewis, who has admirers in high places.
Harry Kane is an admirer of Rico Lewis
Following Lewis’ international debut against North Macedonia in 2023, Harry Kane praised the young defender after his outing in a 1-1 draw.
He liked his ability to be a presence both on and off the ball and told him to stay resilient after giving away a penalty, which shared the points between the two nations.
Since then, Lewis has appeared four more times for his country, but has not played for them since 2024.
With only 10 league matches to his name this season, now could be the time when he pushes a move away from City, in the hope of regaining consistent playing time and a chance to represent his nation again.
A full back is priority number one in the transfer window
Out of all the successful pieces of business that Everton have conducted in recent years, the recruitment of full backs has not fallen under this category.
The signing of Adam Aznou in the summer of 2025 was a refreshing sight for Evertonians, with some calling for new blood on the sides of the defence.
But the Moroccan has only played one game under Moyes, and the usual duo of Jake O’Brien and Vitalii Mykolenko have occupied the right back and left back slots.
To give credit where it is due, the pair have been part of a back four that has recorded the joint second most clean sheets in the Premier League this season, and for a team that has won many games on the back of a resolute defensive unit, O’Brien and Mykolenko have contributed brilliantly.
However, in the modern day of football, teams who want to reach the highest levels need full backs who can operate successfully in every third of the pitch, and it is time for Moyes to find players who can do exactly that.
