It was a red card. Sorry. But while you’re here, read the rest of this and then you can tweet nasty things at little old me, link above the article.
We got off to an excellent start. To be honest, we got out of the blocks far quicker than I expected and we controlled the game entirely, making Wolves look every bit like the newly-promoted club that they are. Michael Keane of all people was marshalling the defence excellently, even if he did have immense dead weight in his partner that he had to drag along for the ride. So fair play Michael, I want to be proven wrong incredibly badly.
Elsewhere, Morgan Schneiderlin was looking composed in the middle, distributing the ball as only an early 2017 Morgan Schneiderlin could. And, as we’re focusing on only the positives on this family friendly Everton reporting page, Jagielka will (pretty, pretty please) never, ever wear a blue shirt again, never mind put the captain’s armband on.
The second half came about and we controlled the early portions just as we did in the first, with Richarlison netting mid-way through the second half and overall putting in a performance that is up there with the best debuts I’ve ever seen.
We got away with a truly great point after a real battling display and that was even with, on paper, a shocking team. But to be fair, my issues were ironed out throughout as Keane, Schneiderlin and Leighton Baines all had brilliant games.
Ironically enough, we defended far better under Marco ‘ Roberto Martinez ‘ Silva than we ever did under Gargantuan Sam, so I’m more than happy.
On to Southampton. In a minute. Read these numbers first.
