Everton fans remember Royston Drenthe

Everton fans have reacted to a post via the club’s official Twitter account wishing Happy Birthday to former player Royston Drenthe.

Breaking on to the scene in 2006 for the Netherlands’ U21 side, Drenthe quickly earned interest from a number of European sides, including Real Madrid, where he would move one-year later.

A five-year spell in Spanish football saw Drenthe play some regular football with Los Blancos, whilst he also had loan spells with Hercules and Everton.

27 appearances during his time at Goodison Park saw the Dutchman score four goals and gain eight assists in all competitions.

Leaving Madrid on a permanent basis in 2012 to join Alania Vladikavkaz, the Dutch winger then had spells with Reading, Sheffield Wednesday, Kayseri Erciyesspor, Baniyas, Sparta Rotterdam and Kozakken Boys.

Now, 33, Drenthe plays amateur football in his homeland, whilst he is also appearing as an actor in a mafia based television show called Mocro Maffia.

Reacting to the tweet, Everton fans looked at Drenthe’s drop in form and retirement at the age of 29.

matchday.
