Everton had a howler by not signing Cody Gakpo

Everton had a significant squad overhaul during the recent summer transfer window in terms of the number of players that made their way to Goodison Park.

This shows just how much Farhad Moshiri has backed his manager, Frank Lampard, to try and push the club forward, despite previous fan protests against him and his running of the club.

Despite splashing the cash on figures such as Neal Maupay, Amadou Onana and Dwight McNeil, among others, one player that the Toffees were linked with but will surely now be regretting not signing is PSV Eindhoven winger, Cody Gakpo.

In 209 appearances for PSV across their senior and youth sides, the 23-year-old has 77 goals and 50 assists to his name.

To compare his previous domestic campaign with McNeil’s previous Premier League season with Burnley, the Dutchman showed how much of a special player he is and why he may have been a better option for Everton to sign than McNeil.

Despite making 11 fewer league appearances than the current Everton winger, Gakpo scored 12 goals and provided 12 assists for his side, which is significantly more than the one assist the Englishman managed to deliver for his previous club.

Additionally, the PSV star had more shots at goal (80 vs 52) and delivered more crosses (139 vs 111) than the 22-year-old.

Hailed as an “electric” player by journalist Josh Bunting on Twitter, Gakpo would surely have been an exciting addition to Lampard’s ranks.

Taking all of that into account, even though the player had a significant reported price tag of £35m, failing to sign him should still be seen as a howler by Moshiri, especially since the PSV star has had a storming start to his latest season by scoring eight goals and providing six assists in 11 appearances across all competitions.

Moving forward, if Everton see an opportunity to sign the winger either in January or the next summer transfer window, they should do everything they can to get him to Goodison.
