Everton’s next keeper move may depend on a departure at the Hill Dickinson

Everton are assessing options to bolster their goalkeeping ranks, with a move for a familiar Premier League name reportedly under consideration should their current back-up depart this summer.

David Moyes’ side are weighing up a move for Sam Johnstone, according to Mail Sport’s Bobby Manzi, with the 33-year-old former England international named as one of several options on Everton’s shortlist.

Interest depends on Mark Travers leaving Merseyside, with Manzi’s report independently followed up by talkSPORT’s Alex Crook and GiveMeSport, who both point to the same shortlist emerging behind Jordan Pickford.

Travers exit would trigger the search

Travers, signed from Bournemouth last summer, is understood to be attracting interest from newly-promoted Coventry City and from Wrexham as both clubs look to add Premier League and Championship-tested goalkeepers respectively.

Everton are likely to wait for clarity on Travers’ situation before pushing further on Johnstone, who has made just 27 appearances since joining Wolves for £10m in 2024 and has fallen behind Jose Sá in the pecking order at Molineux.

It would be Everton’s third goalkeeping addition in as many transfer windows, following Travers and Tom King’s arrivals last summer, with Moyes continuing to prioritise experienced Premier League cover for Pickford rather than developing a younger option.

Johnstone would offer exactly that — proven top-flight minutes, an England cap, and no threat to Pickford’s status as first choice — while giving Moyes a senior alternative should Travers’ expected departure leave a gap in the squad.

The move sits alongside Everton’s broader summer rebuild, where midfield and right-back have so far taken priority over wider squad depth. One to watch rather than get overly excited about.
