Everton’s worst losses in Merseyside Derby history

  • Everton’s rivalry with Liverpool in recent years has been quite one-sided.
  • Blues make it difficult for the Reds at home but Anfield a different story.
  • Toffees will not want a repeat of these performances on Sunday…

The upcoming Merseyside Derby is set to be a historic one as Everton hosts their rivals at Hill Dickinson Stadium for the first time.

David Moyes will hope their next fixture is added to a list of famous wins over the Reds as they continue their charge for European football.

Even though this could be one of the closest encounters between the two in recent seasons, the Blues will be wary that their rivals have a history of some derby day demolitions.

In the hope that history does not repeat itself, these are some of Everton’s worst losses against Liverpool.

Everton 1-4 Liverpool – Disaster under Rafa

Everton’s decision to hire Rafa Benitez gets more confusing by the day, and this result was arguably his final nail in the coffin for some.

Having not won since September, the Blues welcomed high-flying Liverpool in December 2021, and it was a performance that was doomed from the start.

Goals from Jordan Henderson, Mohamed Salah, and Diogo Jota handed Everton an embarrassing defeat on their home turf and sent them even further down the table.

Liverpool 5-2 Everton – Farewell Marco Silva

Following a promising first season on Merseyside, Marco Silva visited Anfield in December 2019 with his job on the line, against a Liverpool team that was storming to a Premier League title.

The Reds hit two in the first 16 minutes, but Michael Keane responded to give Everton a glimmer of hope, yet the night only got worse as the home side bagged three more goals.

On top of the thrashing, Marco Silva was sacked following the game after the Blues dropped to 18th in the league.

Liverpool 1-0 Everton – Pickford calamity

Although this game goes down as one of the few where Everton deserved to win at Anfield, it ultimately ended in vain after a calamitous mistake by Jordan Pickford.

With the game in the dying seconds, a hopeful long ball was launched towards the Everton box, and as the ball came down from the sky, it landed ever so perfectly on top of the crossbar.

Instead of touching the ball behind for a corner, Pickford tried to catch it, but failed to do so, giving Divock Origi the easiest of finishes, and with that, a gutting defeat for Everton.

Liverpool 2-1 Everton – Sylvain Distin

Everton and Liverpool faced each other at Wembley for the first time since the friendly Cup Final of 1989.

Confidence was high for the Blues, and they went ahead in the first half thanks to new star man Nikica Jelavic, but it wasn’t meant to be.

A fumbled pass back by Sylvain Distin gifted the Reds an equaliser, and with momentum in their favour, Andy Carroll snatched a late winner and knocked Everton out of the cup.

Everton 0-5 Liverpool – Rush on a riot and Keeley nightmare

This night in 1982 could make a claim for being one of Everton’s worst in history.

Liverpool’s 5-0 crushing of the Toffees remains their record away victory at the Blues as Ian Rush wiped out the home defence with four goals.

The game was further soured by one of Everton’s worst debuts of all time, after Glenn Keeley made his solitary appearance in royal blue, and ended up getting sent off the pitch following a professional foul on Kenny Dalglish.

Everton’s history against Liverpool has not been kind.

Even in performances where they have played well and deserved a result, they still fall short of getting one over their rivals.

History is there to teach us lessons, and the Toffees will do well to remember these results, so they do not happen again.
