Tarkowski responds to Everton ‘noise’ after turbulent transfer window

James Tarkowski

James Tarkowski says Everton are ignoring the outside “noise” surrounding the club and remain ambitious despite the disappointment of the summer transfer window.

Everton’s failure to land a striker on Deadline Day, coupled with a squad which became smaller during the final stages of the window, prompted plenty of criticism from supporters.

David Moyes has made no secret of wanting more options, but Everton have responded well on the pitch and maintained their unbeaten start to the Premier League season with Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Tottenham.

Tarkowski: Everton confident in themselves

Tarkowski acknowledged the lack of numbers in the squad but believes there is enough quality there to keep pushing. “We know all the noise that has happened around us over these last couple of weeks,” the Everton captain said.

“The squad’s not massive, but it’s a strong squad. There’s lads in there that are young but have had a year to grow last season, and we’re pretty confident in ourselves. So there’s a lot of noise, but internally, we’re striving to be ambitious and push, and we’re not too concerned about that noise on the outside.”

The comments follow Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s admission last week that some of the “meltdowns” surrounding Everton’s transfer business had annoyed him. Moyes was left short of some of the reinforcements he wanted, particularly up front, and has spoken openly about the size of his squad since the window closed.

On the pitch, however, Everton have made an encouraging start. They have taken eight points from their opening four Premier League games and showed another side to themselves at Spurs, surviving a difficult opening before growing into the game and creating chances of their own.
