Thierno Barry scored the only goal as Everton beat Newcastle United for the second time in four days with a 1-0 Premier League victory at St James’ Park.
Barry struck shortly after half-time to secure David Moyes’ side’s first away league win of the season, following Thursday’s 3-1 Carabao Cup victory over the same opposition at the Hill Dickinson.
Barry gives Everton another Newcastle win
Everton started the game confidently and created the better chances during a first half in which Newcastle struggled to make an impression.
Jarrad Branthwaite returned after completing concussion protocols and almost marked his comeback with an assist, heading Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s free-kick into the path of Barry, who was unable to make clean contact from close range. Harrison Armstrong then had another good opportunity shortly before the interval but dragged his finish wide.
The breakthrough arrived four minutes after the restart. James Garner helped release Tyrique George down the left, and his low effort escaped goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek, leaving Barry with a simple finish from close range for his eighth of the season.
Everton continued to threaten after going ahead. Branthwaite forced Hornicek into a save before the Newcastle goalkeeper also denied Dewsbury-Hall and Jake O’Brien as Moyes’ side looked for a second.
Newcastle eventually stirred, and Anthony Elanga came closest to an equaliser when his effort struck the post and travelled across goal before James Tarkowski cleared the danger.
Jordan Pickford had been well protected for most of the evening but was required late on, saving with his legs from Yoane Wissa as Newcastle pushed for an equaliser. Substitute Jacob Ramsey was then sent off in stoppage time after collecting two yellow cards in quick succession.
Jack Grealish was again absent from the Everton squad, with the club stating before kick-off that he was not match fit following his disciplinary omission from Thursday’s cup tie.
His absence did little, in fairness, to disrupt another assured Everton performance. Moyes’ side have now beaten Newcastle twice in four days, reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals and climbed to seventh in the Premier League.
