Richarlison Everton return talk isn’t going away after latest Tottenham twist

Everton’s failed attempt to bring Richarlison back to Merseyside may not be the end of the story.

The former Everton favourite was given permission to speak to the Toffees during the final days of the transfer window, with the two clubs discussing a possible £35m deal.

It ultimately came to nothing, but Richarlison’s position at Tottenham has become even more uncertain since.

Richarlison left out in the cold

Spurs have now officially left the 29-year-old out of their 25-man Premier League squad for the first half of the season.

That means Richarlison cannot play another league game for Tottenham before the registration lists can be changed in January, unless he qualifies under an exemption – which he does not.

His omission is worth noting given he was Tottenham’s leading scorer last season with 12 goals.

Roberto De Zerbi has since revealed that Richarlison was offered a new contract several months ago but turned it down, having made clear that he wanted to leave the club.

Trabzonspor have been trying to take him to Turkey, and Spurs rejected earlier offers from the Super Lig club. Reports this morning have even suggested Tottenham could consider terminating his contract if a permanent solution cannot be found.

That remains only a reported possibility, but there is little doubt Richarlison’s future in north London looks bleak. None of this means another Everton move is imminent.

The transfer window is closed and, after the chaos surrounding the failed Folarin Balogun deal, the Toffees have other issues to deal with first.

But Everton were discussing a return for Richarlison only days ago. Now he cannot play Premier League football for Spurs and clearly wants to leave.

So when supporters wonder whether this particular story could come around again, it isn’t difficult to see why.

The reunion didn’t happen this week. But maybe it still will.
